LEARN TO SWIM CLASS SKILL LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
Waterbabies
Prerequisites: None; parent(s) in the water. You and your baby will learn together and enjoy a fun water experience. This class helps your child to develop a comfort level in and around the water as well as a readiness to swim. Games and skills involve front crawl arm stroke, going underwater, kicking and blowing bubbles. Additional skills include front and back floating, pushing off, jumping in and underwater swimming with kicking. The main objective is water experience and safety skills for the child and assisting parents in gaining confidence with handling their child in the water. Age level: 6 months – 4 years.
Advanced Waterbabies
Prerequisites: Parent(s) in the water, bubble blowing, hold breath to count of five and go underwater with no fear. If your child shows no fear and will go underwater willingly and come up smiling, this is the class for you and your child. Front and back crawl arm stroke, front and back floating with finning, pushing off, jumping in and underwater swimming with kicking are all developed in this class. Games are combined with skills for a fun-packed 30 minutes. Age level: 18 months - 4 years.
Swimming Tots
Prerequisites: Parent(s) in the water. Child should be able to kick up to the surface after jumping in. We will work on front and back crawl arm stroke, prone glide pushing off the steps with face in, supine glide, unsupported front and back floating, surface diving with underwater retrieval of toys, bobbing and other beginning swimming skills.
Level I
Prerequisites: Ages 3 and up, parent(s) ready to go in the water. Water Exploration – Designed to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
Level II A
Prerequisites: Submerge face (3 sec.), bob, supported front and back float, supported kicking on front and back. Primary Skills - Designed to develop fundamental swimming skills.
Level II B
Prerequisites: Jump in and go under with support, float on front with face in water, float on back, swim on front and on back 5 yards. Primary Skills – Designed to develop fundamental swimming skills.
Level III
Prerequisites: Fully submerge and hold breath (3 sec.), retrieve objects in the water, unsupported front and back float, turn over, bob 10 times, flutter kick front and back, finning on back, back crawl arm stroke, swim on front and on back 10 yards. Stroke Readiness – Introduction of elementary backstroke and treading water.
Level IV
Prerequisites: Retrieve objects with eyes open and no support, bob 15 times with travel, prone and supine glide with push off two body lengths, front crawl with side breathing10 yards, change directions while swimming on front and on back, tread water. Stroke Development – Designed to develop confidence in strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Students will increase their endurance with elementary back, front and back crawl.
Level V
Prerequisites: Deep water bob, rotary breathing, front and back crawl 25 yards, elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick and sidestroke kick 10 yards, sculling on back 5 yards, tread water two minutes. Stroke Refinement - Objective is coordination and refinement of key strokes – butterfly, open turns, and feet first dive are learned.
Level VI
Prerequisites: Stride jump entry, alternate breathing, breaststroke and sidestroke 10 yards, swim under water three body lengths, elementary back 25 yards, front and back crawl 50 yards, dolphin kick 10 yards, open turns, tread water two minutes with two different kicks. Skill Proficiency – Objective is to polish strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.
Adult Beginner
Prerequisites: 11+ YEARS. This class is for beginning swimmers and will emphasize learning to front and back float, swim underwater and an introduction to the front crawl and back crawl. Perfect for the adult with little or no swimming experience.
Adult Advance Beginner
Prerequisites: 11+ years. This class will improve on Adult Beginner skills while adding backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke when participants are ready.
Adult Fitness/Master Swim
Prerequisites: All levels of swimmers who can swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke are welcome. Focus will be technique in all four strokes, conditioning, and competition training. Classes are coached by competitive swimmers and triathletes. See Group Exercise schedule for class offerings. Free for KAC members. Fees apply to non-members only.
